Unity's Five Basic Beliefs

1. There is only one Presence and one Power active as the universe and as my life, God the good.
2. Our essence is of God; therefore we are inherently good. This God essence, called the Christ was fully expressed in Jesus.
3. We are co-creators with God, creating reality through thoughts held in mind.
4. Through prayer and meditation, we align our heart mind with God. Denials and affirmations are tools we use.
5. Through our thoughts, words and actions, we live the truth we know.

Unity of Shepherdstown began as a study group meeting at New Street Methodist over ten years ago. We have been holding Sunday services at The Shepherdstown Train Station since 2003. As a spiritual community we are warm and welcoming. We are members of The Association of Unity Churches and affiliated with Unity publishers of Daily Word and Unity Magazine

As humans we have tendencies that deny our spiritual nature, yet we are also spiritual beings with tendencies that can lead us to discover our true nature and our oneness with God. We can discover this mysterious spiritual self in times of darkness and hurting or in times of light and joy. Come to Unity on Sunday and learn how we can fulfill God’s plan by waking up spiritually.

Unity is a world-wide movement that began 116 years ago in Kansas City Missouri. Unity was founded by Charles and Myrtle Fillmore. After Myrtle Fillmore's remarkable healing utilizing prayer and affirmations, many who were seeking help became interested in how she accomplished this healing. From small prayer circles in living rooms, Unity grew. The first issue of Unity Magazine was published in 1889. The teaching of the practice of prayer, through classes and correspondence, led to the establishment of Unity School, where the prayer ministry, Silent Unity, began, along with Unity School for Religious Studies, and a publishing arm for magazines and books. These services still exist today, under the name Unity®.
